Baylie Broesch (11) and Makaena Judkins (11) spend time planning the upcoming yearbook during an evening work session at the Inland Northwest Yearbook Camp in Cheney, WA this summer.

Members of the Ephrata High School’s yearbook staff attended the 2023 Inland Northwest Yearbook Camp from July 31 – August 3.  The annual event, hosted by Herff Jones, took place on the campus of Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington.  Herff Jones is a yearbook production company that works with advisers and their staff across the country to help create yearbooks for their respective schools.  Ephrata has been utilizing the services of Herff Jones for several years.  Matt and Jennifer Johnson oversee Herff Jones representation in Eastern Washington and have been valued resources to the staff of The Eye, Ephrata High School’s yearbook.

The conference opened with keynote speaker Mike Simons discussing the fundamental necessity of theme development.  Simons, the adviser for Corning-Painted Post High School in Corning, New York.  Simons directs the Tessarae yearbook staff for Corning-Painted Post.  His staff annually receives multiple awards from the Journalism Education Association, Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and National Scholastic Press Association.  Simons is a recognized speaker and guru when it comes to developing yearbook themes.

Juniors Makaena Judkins and Baylie Broesch, along with their adviser Ryan Shannon, took part in several workshops to get the 2023-2024 yearbook off to an early start.  During their time at camp, the team listened to several speakers discuss theme fundamentals and took part in breakout sessions with such topics as “24 for 24”, “Start the Year Off Right” and “Building a Staff Culture”.

The Eye will publish its 84th edition during the 2023-24 school year.  Judkins and Broesch are part of a 20-member team tasked with creating, producing, and selling The Eye.
